Crossed-uncrossed difference (CUD) in a new light: anatomy of the negative CUD in Poffenberger's paradigm.

چکیده
Crossed Uncrossed Differentials (CUDs) have long been used as surrogate for the interhemispheric transfer time (IHTT). Evidence is presented that macular vision is the province of the major hemisphere, wherein all commands are initiated regardless of the laterality of the effectors of such commands. Using clinical and time-resolved data it is shown also that the above arrangement (i.e. neural handedness) corresponds to the subject's behavioral avowed (avowed, self-declared) handedness only in a statistical sense; with a substantial minority of humanity displaying a disparity of neural and behavioral handedness. Evidence is provided that the negative CUD in previously reported studies was a reflection of such incongruity in those subjects studied. Thus, to lateralize the command center it is sufficient to determine the reaction time of two symmetrically located effectors on the body. The side with longer reaction time is ipsilateral to the major hemisphere, with the difference of the two sides commensurate to transcallosal IHTT.

The role of task history in simple reaction time to lateralized light flashes.
In lateralized simple reaction time (SRT) tasks with unimanual responses, reaction times (RTs) are faster with ipsilateral (uncrossed) than with contralateral (crossed) response hand-target hemifield combinations. The difference between crossed and uncrossed responses (CUD) is typically interpreted to reflect callosal transfer time. Indeed, split brain patients have much longer CUDs than contro...

متن کاملCrossed-uncrossed difference in simple reaction times to lateralized flashes: between- and within-subjects variability.
In unimanual reaction times (RT) to lateralized flashes, contralateral responses tend to be slower than ipsilateral responses. This has been called Crossed-Uncrossed Difference (CUD). The CUD tends to show variability across subjects and across studies, but until now the stability of the CUD in an individual subject has not been investigated. To address the role of inter- and intra-subject vari...

We used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural correlates of basic interhemispheric visuo-motor integration. In a simple reaction time task, subjects responded to lateralized left and right light flashes with unimanual left and right hand responses. Typically, reaction times are faster for uncrossed responses (that is, visual stimulus and response h...
متن کاملAttention and Interhemispheric Transfer: A Behavioral and fMRI Study
When both detections and responses to visual stimuli are performed within one and the same hemisphere, manual reaction times (RTs) are faster than when the two operations are carried out in different hemispheres. A widely accepted explanation for this difference is that it reflects the time lost in callosal transmission. Interhemispheric transfer time can be estimated by subtracting RTs for unc...
